Why am I doing this? It sounds bonkers….
Why wouldn’t you? This is the McBrave Games. This is an event you can take part in by yourself, or with family and friends, to experience and celebrate the best of Scottish heritage, culture and tradition.
How difficult is it? Do I need to train to make it round McBrave Games?
It’s a 10km challenge, but it’s not timed. We wouldn’t say you need to train hard, but you need to some some work, and be fit enough to enjoy the games and get around the 10km course. We aren’t as hard as Tough Mudder, Spartan, MacTuff , or a half marathon but it’s still a physical undertaking.
Everyone taking part must be over 16 on Games day, and under 80.
What do I wear?
We love Scottish fancy dress here at McBrave Games. There will be a prize for the best overall fancy dress, as long as it’s VERY scottish. Use your imagination. Everything from a Highland Coo to a tough or tartan will be welcome. Remember you will be active during the event, so make sure you can run and crawl in your outfit, and we recommend trainers with grip for your feet! There will be some Scottish garb to buy on event day so if you forget, we can help you out at the last minute.
The brilliant Scottish weather...
One of the best things about Scotland is our weather. Or as Billy Connolly would say “In Scotland there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes”. So with that in mind, come prepared for it to be a wee bit dreich, blowing a hoolie or it might even be taps aff weather. Remember you’re outside, and we do get all the seasons in one day from time to time.
When does my event start?
Registration will open at 8am on event day, and your start time will be confirmed in your pre-event email which you will receive 6 weeks before the event. You won’t receive anything in the post, so you must arrive 90 minutes before your start time to collect your event number.
Start wave times will be allocated every 20 minutes from 10am to 1pm depending on final participant numbers. Each wave will have between 70-100 people in it to ensure the course and games do not become congested.
Please be at the start line (in your Scottish fancy dress) 20 minutes before your allocated start time.
Can I choose my start time?
Due to the start waves, you will be allocated your start time 6 weeks prior to the event, and we will let you know via email. It would be great if you could stick to the timing allocated to make sure the event flows well and we don’t have too many people on the course at once.
Clan members will all start together in the same start wave.
The Clan Village
The Clan Village is the event hub, it’s where everything starts and finishes! This is where YOU start and finish, we sort out any questions you might have, but most importantly there is a chance to have some Scottish scran, a drink and celebrate after you’ve completed your round of games. This is also the spot for your friends and family to relax while you are out there getting a sweat on. There will be some fine Scottish music here too throughout the day.
How do I get there?
Newhailes is easy to get to!
Bus – Number 30 goes from Edinburgh city centre and stops just outside the venue
Train – Jump on the train from Waverley for 7 minutes, and the venue is 5 minutes walk from the station at Musselburgh
Taxi – a taxi is approximately 15 minutes from Edinburgh City Centre
Are there showers at the event?
Unfortunately no, but you have earned that sweat – show it off in the pub. That’s the smell of victory!
Can I bring my friends and family to watch and cheer?
We welcome everyone to come along and join in the fun, the more the merrier. Spectators are not allowed on the course, but can cheer from the sidelines, and enjoy the Clan village. Please keep a close eye on your wee ones, and do keep all dogs on a lead.
Is there a bag drop and lost property?
Yes, there will be a bag drop and lost property on site. We recommend leaving what you can in your car if you are driving. Please don’t bring any valuables, and we really suggest you don’t take your new I Phone on the course with you as it might not survive!
What about Health and safety?
McBrave Games is all about having a great time, while testing your metal, but we take your safety seriously. The whole event will be fully risk assessed, signed clearly and all hazards will be identified. All staff will be fully briefed.
There will be a short verbal safety brief at the start line.
If you decide you don’t want to take part in a game, no problem just walk around it. Please remember you are the best judge of what you are capable of, you are here to challenge yourself. We have a professional medical team present both in the Clan village and on the course.
Entry as an individual or Clan
You can enter on your own, or in a Clan of 2,3 or 4. More information can be found on this if you click on the ENTER button on the home page. If you have a large group of more than 8 (2 x 4 clan entries) then please drop us an email as we can make sure you all stay together on event day.
What do I do when i finish?
Once you’ve completed the Games, there will be food and drink in back in the clan village, and we would love you to enjoy the music, have some banter and relax after your event. Bring along some warm and dry clothes with you, and our top tip is bringing something to sit on in your car on the way home, as you might be a wee bit wet.
